How We Found It: Shawn’s addiction to Google Maps; he saw a rock on the map and thought it would be good to hike. It turns out that it is.
Date and Distance Hiked: 2/8/14, 6.4 miles.
Good Seasons: Winter (great views), spring (flora and not too hot), fall (leaves!).
Find the Trailhead: In Pisgah National Forest near Brevard; 1/2 mile from US 275 on FR 475.
Map: No paper map at trailhead, but the always fabulous Hike WNC website has a map as well as a good set of instructions for finding the trailhead. The trail itself is well traversed and blazed with yellow rectangles.
Bathroom Situation: Nope.
Fees (Where/How Much): Free.
Our Route: Looking Glass Rock Trail up and back (3.2 miles each way).
Tips/Of Interest:
• This is Pisgah, so there will be crowds. There’s a parking area that was full even on this cold, windy day, but you can also park along the road.
• The trail takes you up a mountain and back down, so most of your uphill is on the first half of the hike.
• One exception is the short, steep-ish decline to reach the end of the trail/main view. You have to hike up from the end of the trail to start hiking down the mountain again.
Hike Highlights:
• Views along the way of surrounding Pisgah National Forest along with a gorgeous panoramic view at the terminus of the trail.
• Big, flat rock spaces similar to the granitic-pluton landscape at Stone Mountain, NC, or Table Rock, SC.
• Quick drive over to Looking Glass Falls after the hike: magnificent.
